Rider employment report released, takeaway drives 2.70 million employment

At the award ceremony, Meituan also released the "New Youth in the City: Employment Report of Takeaway Riders in 2018" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"). The "Report" is based on Meituan platform data, 118,000 effective rider questionnaire, and gives answers on the real family, income, work, life and study of the rider group.

The report shows that in 2018, more than 2.7 million riders earned income from Meituan food delivery. 77% of the riders came from rural areas, and the majority were born in the 1980s and 1990s, and 92% were men. Most of them are the backbone of their families. 60% of the riders are married and have children, and 40% of the riders’ lovers choose to take care of children and the elderly at home. 45% of the riders receive more than 20 orders per day, and 40% of the riders travel more than 50 kilometers per day, which is close to the total length of Beijing’s Fourth Ring Road. But they are not satisfied with this. 35% of Meituan riders have other sources of income, such as factory workers, enterprises and institutions, and starting their own small business or starting a business.

Flexible working hours, guaranteed income, and free time have become important reasons for them to choose to be riders. 52% of riders work less than 4 hours a day, and 39% of riders work 4 to 8 hours.

The "Report" shows that 53% of Meituan riders will choose to work in the province, with Henan, Anhui, Shanxi, Jiangxi and Guangxi becoming the provinces with the highest proportion of riders working in the same province. In terms of geography, the number of riders working in Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang is the largest, followed by Shanghai and Beijing. The number of riders in provinces with higher GDP is relatively large.

In addition, Meituan Takeaway has launched a special rider protection plan, providing care funds covering 25 major diseases to fully protect the health and safety of riders.
