It is not a problem that the Asian Newcomer Award supports the new forces of film and focuses on the age of innovation.

The Asian Newcomer Award unit, which started from the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2004, aims to support the emerging forces of Asian films, find Asian film talents and provide them with opportunities to show their talents. Every year, 10 films are shortlisted for the Asian Newcomer Award, competing for the two awards of "Best Film" and "Best Director", and the winning director can also get a bonus of 150,000 yuan, which provides some material guarantee for the director’s subsequent creative path.

When asked what kind of film is likely to enter the eyes of the judges and finally win the grand prize, Hur Jin-ho, the chairman of the jury and a Korean director, replied: "It doesn’t matter whether the director is young or old. We look at the novelty of film creation and the perfection of production, so we will conduct this review fairly and justly."

Shozo Ichiyama, a Japanese producer who used to be a producer of Jia Zhangke, The World and other films, also expressed the same view. He said, "It’s not about being young or old, what matters is whether there will be surprises. At that time, Jia Zhangke left a deep impression on me. The film that gives people a feeling that they have never seen before is the newcomer award. "

Pema Tseden

Yang Caini won’t be partial to the female director Pema Tseden.

Yang Caini, a Hong Kong actress who appeared in a black tights that day, was in high spirits and could not see the trace of time. As a judge of the Asian Newcomer Award, she also acted as an excellent guide and started the creative road of writing, directing and acting. When asked about the few short-listed films for female directors in this newcomer award, Yang Caini replied: "I think film works are directed by both men and women. It is personal experience that makes a person want to make a certain work, which is related to experience and has nothing to do with gender."

Pema Tseden, a young mainland director who has participated in the Shanghai Film Festival for four times, is deeply moved from the contestant in that year to the judge now. Expressing his expectations for the new director, Pema Tseden said: "It is a great honor to be a judge of this year’s new director award. I hope that the new director can stick to his own style, and persistence is the most important thing." When asked about the significance of winning the newcomer award to the newcomer director, Pema Tseden said very realistically: "In fact, compared with the award, the bonus of 150,000 yuan is more helpful for young directors, because the pre-production of my second film was completed with the bonus of the Asian Newcomer Award."
